Paul uses martial arts to fight back after cancer

A CANCER patient used an unconventional method to fight the disease – martial arts.

Paul Townsley was diagnosed with testicular cancer in February 2011 and was referred to the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre for treatment.

After surgery and chemotherapy, Paul used tang soo do, a Korean martial art, to regain strength and fitness.

Mr Townsley said: "Tang soo do is a big part of my life – and has helped me in my recovery."

Once out of hospital, Paul wanted to give something back for the care he had received.

And having gained so much from the martial art he used the technique to help him raise money for the hospital.

"I decided to do something that might help those battling on the front line against cancer – the doctors and nurses who deal with it on a daily basis," he said.

To raise money for the cause, the Chipping Sodbury plumber held a spar-a-thon, which meant asking tang soo do fighters from across the country to complete 100 one-minute fights, mirroring his long battle against cancer.

Participants came from throughout the UK and included Paul's wife and son as well as members of his local club.

A total of £5,280 was raised for Above and Beyond, the charity which funds the extras to improve patients' wellbeing and happiness at the city centre hospitals.

Mr Townsley said: "The event was a real success – everyone had good fun, and it was carried out in good humour. Everyone felt they might have made a difference. I hope we have – as the care from the team at the hospital was first class."

Consultant Alex Walther said: "What Paul has done is so much appreciated.

"I know what hard work goes into fundraising – organising the event and collecting the money – and we are so grateful to you for your support."
