Mark McGhee is making moves to bring a trio of last season's loan players back to the Memorial Stadium next term.
The manager wants to reunite young Leicester City duo Cian Bolger and Tom Parkes in central defence.
And his also asking Stoke City boss and former Rovers player Tony Pulis to allow talented young midfielder Matt Lund another spell in the West Country.
Parkes, who came up through Leicester's academy alongside Bolger, impressed during his 14 outings for the side last term.
With Byron Anthony – cuttently being linked with interest from Carlisle United and Northampton Town – expected to be released when the club finally confirm their retained list later this week, it will leave Adam Virgo as the only central defender on the club's books – and he is still on the road back to fitness after missing the majority of last season with a serious knee injury.
McGhee also has to decide whether to pursue his interest in Aaron Downes, who also had a loan spell at Rovers last season and has now been released by parent club Chesterfield.
"I am currently talking to Leicester about the possibility of bringing Tom and Cian back to the club," said McGhee.
"I am also talking to another centre half this week, and I have to make a decision on Aaron."
Lund made 12 appearances during his loan spell from the Potters, coming off the bench to net twice in his final appearance – the 5-1 thrashing of Accrington Stanley.
"I have spoken to Stoke about having Matt back as I think he is going to get better and better, and I would like another couple of midfield players," said McGhee.
