TWELVE new championship records were set in the Avon County Track and Field Championships staged at the Yate arena last weekend.
Arguably the most outstanding display came from 16-year-old Yate & District AC's Rob Phillips, who carved 1.45secs off his personal best in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.14secs, which lifted him to fifth in the UK Under-17 men's rankings.
Phillips, who is coached by Sandra Woodman, also ran a PB of 50.80secs, his first time under 51 seconds, to finish runner-up in the 400m, an event won by clubmate and training partner Josh Evans.
Just a week after winning a bronze medal in the UK School Games held in the Olympic Stadium in a PB of 49.57secs, the third quickest in the country this year, the 16-year again dipped under 50 seconds with a championship record of 49.98secs. Evans also won the 100m in 11.72secs.
Also in the sprints, 14-year-old Bristol & West athlete Tomas Goodman leapt to fourth in the UK rankings for under-15 boys with a sparkling time of 37.99secs in the 300m, which suggests a fast 400m is within his scope.
Clubmate Kwame Fordwor claimed an impressive victory over GB junior international Leon Reid with the 18-year-old winning the Under-20 men's 100m in a championship record time of 11.20secs. Reid got his revenge in the 200m, in which Fordwor was runner-up in a PB of 22.43secs.
In the middle distances, the top performance came from Lily Owsley with the 17-year-old Bristol & West AC runner – who is also a very good hockey player – stepping onto the track for the first time this year to win in a record time of 2:13.28 thanks in part to good pacemaking assistance by training partner Olivia Sadler. Owsley also won the 400m.
There were also record runs by Yate's Floren Scrafton in the Under-20 women's 1,500m and Team Bath's Craig Bridges in the senior men's 3000m. In the field, Clutton's Amy Woodman won the senior long jump in a record of 6.02m, just below her season's best of 6.05m, while Bristol & West's top class new signing Liam Biddlecombe won the discus with a throw of 48.88m.
Bristol & West AC junior international Lucy Bryan won the pole vault with a leap of 3.83m, but suffered a tweak in her back which means she has had to pull out of the GB Under-20s squad for the Loughborough International tomorrow.
The other records fell to the Team Bath AC pair of Alice Reynolds (Under-15 girls' high jump) and Ellie J Webb (Under-15 girls shot).
