Three races with three different winners – that sums up the closeness of the racing in the fourth round of the South West Premier Motocross series at Exminster on Sunday.
Tiverton's Luke Hill, who leads the title chase, had to play second fiddle to Jackson Evans for eight laps in the first race. He was then involved in a spill and Luke Blanchard passed Hill to head the race, but on the penultimate lap he made a mistake on a U-turn and Hill nipped through to win by a second.
Blanchard led the second race for three laps before losing the advantage to Evans. With less than two laps to go, Blanchard fell and he lost places to Hill and Jamie Skuse.
Plymouth Yamaha star Darren Shears led the last race from the word go, leaving Cremers Evans, Jake Shipton and Hill to dispute the minor positions.
Ryan Blee won the first two junior championship races but fell heavily in the last race, breaking a finger in the process.
Stars of yesteryear Mark Wild, John Lock and Jason Fraser shared the three over 35 years races. Kevin Edwards narrowly missed a hat-trick in the over 40 years events and Southampton veteran Tom Lowe dominated the over 50 years races.
Paul Manning netted a three-mark win over Simon Prideaux in the North Somerset club's hour-long timed and observation trial at Hanham Mills.
All the major award winners in an entry of 60-plus completed eight laps and a total of 48 observed sections.
Prideaux was outstanding in the first section on an S bend climb over roots and rocks, losing just three marks to Manning's nine. But like many others Prideaux went the incorrect side of a course marker in the second section which cost him 21 marks. Enduro class winner Tom Smith was first to complete the event closely followed by Wessex Centre Champion Jason Hamblin and his brother Mark.
Brit Tommy Searle won both 250cc races in the Brazilian round of the World Motocross championships at Beto Carrera in extremely wet conditions. He is now 20 points behind Dutch youngster Jeffrey Herlings in the title chase with 11 rounds to come.
