Chippie Bates just misses out on a 100lb haul at Somerton

KEYNSHAM carpenter Warren Bates missed hitting the 100lb-mark by just 2.5lb in the Fry's AC match, fished on Viaduct Fishery's Campbell Match Lake at Somerton.

Bates long-poled both pellet and caster up to 17 metres off peg 118 on the Cary Causeway and brought 97-8-0 of carp weighing into low double figures to the scales.

The second best weight of the day came from the opposite side of the lake and fell to Andy Curry at corner peg 123.

He long-poled pellet at 14 metres both central and lakeside and weighed-in a similar 95-7-0 of carp.

The top silvers weight was taken by the club's PR officer, Dean Harvey, who poled luncheon meat and sweetcorn down the edge of peg 130 and finished the day with a creditable 35-2-0 of tench weighing between two and five pound.

Summer peg 24 came up with a 71-10-0 victory for Harry Muir in the South West Disabled AC's match, fished on Acorn's Paddock at Kingston Seymour.

Muir poled a soft pellet hookbait over a pre-soaked micro pellet feed into both island and lakeside margins and included carp to almost 5lb, skimmers, roach and f1's in his winning nets.

Mike Chapman picked-up the silvers pools money with a 24-6-0 catch of skimmers and f1's taken from the island and lakeside margins of peg 28 with worm fished over a chopped worm feed.

Former Avon Angling star, Brian Shanks, pictured, poled an 8mm banded pellet shallow at 14 metres central off peg 11 on Woodlands Lake and clinched a comfortable 110-9-0 victory in the Bristol PSV match, fished at Chilton Trinity Waters.

The heaviest silvers catch was taken by Derek Lucas, who poled caster to the edge of a reed bed at peg two and weighed in 11-10-0 of tench, skimmers and roach.

Result: Overall: 1, Brian Shanks 110-9-0, peg 11; 2, Richard Jones 86-14-0, peg 33; 3, Darren North 76-11-0. Peg 27; 4, Ron Hardiman 70-0-0, peg 14; 5, Steve Burgess 66-8-0, peg 7. Silvers: 1, Derek Lucas 11-10-0, peg 2.

The Bristol Post Office scraped home by just 3-0-0 after knocking up a 43-0-0 catch in an interclub match with the Kingswood RBL at Farleigh Lake. The top weight fell to RBL member Bill Knight, who poled maggot and pellet into the lakeside margins of peg eight and finished with 16-4-0 of skimmers and 4-12-0 of carp.

Postman Lee Wakefield came a close second with a 19-9-0 catch of carp taken from the margins of peg 12 with sweetcorn and pellet.
