Open air fun as children go for swimming gold

HUNDREDS of schoolchildren from across Portishead made a splash at a mini Olympics competition at the town's open air pool.

Around 200 youngsters from Highdown Juniors, Portishead Primary School, St Peter's Primary School and Trinity Primary took to the water for a swimming challenge to mark the forthcoming Olympics and celebrate the open air pool's 50th birthday.

Youngsters took part in a total of 87 races, in backstroke, breast stroke and crawl as well as a relay race.

Highdown Juniors were crowned the winners, taking the most gold medals for their efforts.

Children were presented with their medals by Portishead Town Council chairman, Councillor John Clark.

An inflatable assault course was placed in the pool to play on after the sporting challenge and all those who took part received a Portishead Open Air Pool baseball cap and a certificate.

Organiser Brenda Birkinshaw said: "It was a fabulous day and a great way to celebrate the pool's 50th birthday and the Olympics.

"It was an opportunity for the children not only to experience the pool, but also to feel what it would be like to compete in an event such as the Olympics."
